“I shall not seek, and I will not accept, the nomination of my party for another term as your President.” Forty-three years have passed since the 37th U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson made this announcement that stunned his supporters and shocked the nation. It is rare for any incumbent to bow out before the voters pass judgment. Today, New Hampshire Governor John Lynch announced in front of fourth graders (yes, fourth graders!) at a Manchester elementary school that he will not seek a record fifth term. Unlike Johnson, Lynch did not assume office under a grieving nation, nor is he leaving mired in a controversial war. Believe it or not, he is actually leaving as one of the most popular governors ever in American history!

What will be Lynch’s legacy? Despite our political differences, Lynch is a likeable individual. A physically unintimidating man, Lynch skated through his governorship by avoiding controversy. From all appearances, he is a loving family man, seemingly even-keeled, and soft-spoken voice for the liberal cause. Lynch gained the nickname “Governor Flynch” for his many flip-flops on issues such as gay marriage. Vowing that he would uphold heterosexual marriage in the Granite State, New Hampshire became the fifth state to usher in gay marriage in 2010. Lynch also angered many liberals by refusing to legalize medical marijuana. Both sides of the aisle praised Lynch’s work to reform school funding in New Hampshire.

Lynch’s narrowest margin of victory was his first campaign, beating unpopular incumbent Craig Benson by only 2 points. In the subsequent three elections Lynch trounced his opponents and in 2006 by as much as 50 percentage points! I believe, however, that Lynch foresaw the writing on the wall for all Democrats in 2012. As they say, it is better to leave on top. I highly doubt this will be the last time we hear John Lynch’s name associated with political office. While Lynch remains coy about a possible run for the U.S. Senate, I suspect a career politician such as he will enter the foray again, and soon!

Who will succeed Lynch? The news of Lynch’s resignation is not even cool from the presses and the rumor mills are already firing on all cylinders. On the Democratic side, names such as Portsmouth, NH Mayor Steve Marchand may enter the field, as well as U.S. Attorney John Kacavas. The Republican field is wide open, with politicians such as Rep. Jeb Bradley and Manchester Attorney Ovide Lamontagne likely making a bid for the governorship. It should make for a very interesting political primary season in New Hampshire!

The will of the people and the voting majority is thwarted yet once again. U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker overturned California’s same-sex marriage ban, Proposition 8, ruling that it was unconstitutional. Could it be possible that there was some bias on this ruling considering Judge Walker himself is gay? It would appear that this is one man’s crusade against the masses that number in the millions. After all, California voters passed the ban after the state Supreme Court legalized gay marriage. When one individual can overrule the voting millions the intoxicating power must be overwhelming. This goes far beyond whether you are for or against gay marriage.

There was another snub of voters this week. Missouri voters rejected a mandate that they buy health insurance as required in the Democrats’ healthcare reform bill. White House press secretary Robert Gibbs dismissed the votes of these Missouri citizens in a display of arrogance indicating that these hicks, hayseeds and hillbillies don’t know any better. Asked what it means that over 71 percent of voters in Missouri would vote against the health care mandate Gibbs sniffed, “Nothing.”

“This arrogance and political tone deafness from the Obama White House is simply astounding. That the White House has shown such blatant disregard for the votes cast by Missourians as ‘nothing’ is startling, and it should make clear just how out-of-touch the Obama Administration and Democrats are with average Americans.”
~Senator John Cornyn (R-Texas)

Polls indicate that the majority of Americans reject the new health care law. It was ramrodded through Congress against the will of the American majority under the guise of the high and mighty Democratic party knowing better than the citizens of their constituencies.

The absolute arrogance of this country’s leadership is repugnant. It appears we are entering an era when the power of the people’s vote is becoming meaningless. Will all voting in this country eventually become moot when the vote does not meet the desires and expectations of those already in power? We little people need guidance from our ignorance from those in high office. Without this guidance from lofty political positions we the peasants will flounder in our liberty and freedom.

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer signed a new immigration bill into law amidst protests and clashes at the state Capitol this past Friday. If nothing else Arizona has brought immediate and profound attention to the problem of illegal immigrants.

“We in Arizona have been more than patient waiting for Washington to act. But decades of inaction and misguided policy have created a dangerous and unacceptable situation.”
~Governor Jan Brewer after signing the law

Some of those that vehemently oppose this legislation are Attorney General Terry Goddard, a Democrat who is running for governor, Rabbi Maynard Bell the Arizona office of the American Jewish Committee’s area director, Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon, American Civil Liberties Union, the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund a civil-rights group, and the police chiefs association. By the way, it is important to note that those opposed have offered up no valid solution to this overwhelming problem.

Let’s add Barack Obama to the list of those opposing this legislation. While quick to criticize he has done little to address the problem and done even less to stem the wave of illegal immigrants into the state of Arizona again offering up virtually no solutions. What part of illegal does the President not understand? Which law infraction do we turn a blind eye to next?

Is the point in Governor Brewer signing this bill into law to force the hand of the federal government to do something, anything in order to curb the influx of illegal immigrants pouring into this southwest corner of the United States and creating problems that are now out of control? Obama may not wake up in the state of Arizona every morning but he did receive a wake up call with the passing of this legislation. Maybe the President will choose to continue doing nothing about this problem in hopes that it will rally the hispanic vote in favor of the Democratic party while they demonize a Republican Governor’s decision. Is this the strategy and hope of the White House administration?

The push is on for Congressional leaders to take up immigration reform this year. After ramming through a contentious health care bill it’s going to be another hard sell to convince the American people a rushed immigration bill is in their best interest especially before the November elections.

Anyone that is familiar with hiking knows the rule of staying on the trail. South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford, while supposedly hiking the Appalachian Trail, strayed off the trail and ended up in Argentina. See what happens when you break the rule. No one knew where he was. He was essentially missing and certainly not running the state in his abscence. Then the scandalous, sordid details emerged. Another politician in the throes of infidelity. And it gets worse. State funds are reported to have been used on at least one trip to Argentina that included a rendezvous with his love interest. Sanford has promised to reimburse the state, probably little comfort to his family.

Fellow Republicans are now calling for his resignation. He has no plans to resign in an apparent sign of arrogance. His political career is over and any future political aspirations have been hopelessly dashed.

There’s no doubt that Sanford is going to be a very ineffective leader of his state in the time he has left in office. It is in the best interest of South Carolina for Mark Sanford to resign. He can then try to reclaim some semblance of diginity and self-respect in privacy and out of the spotlight of public office.

The vote in California this week was equivalent to an earthquake felt across America. Is it a warning of things to come? The citizens of this country are fed up with the incompetence of their elected leaders and will no longer accept increased taxes to compensate for wasteful spending. In the past couple of years the Republicans have suffered the wrath of the left. Now that the Democrats are totally in charge they are proving to be even more inept. No longer can they continue to enjoy the luxury of blaming everything on George Bush and his administration. It’s time for the Democratic party to take off the knickers and put on the big boy pants and start accepting responsibility for the decisions that they are making.

During the recent teaparty movement there were those on the left along with the main stream news media that would have everyone believe that this was an act of subversion by a bunch of malcontent rednecks, racists and losers. But they were wrong. It was people, American citizens of all persuassions that are disgusted with the direction their elected government officials are taking this country.

The recent California vote was not a teaparty. It was a very loud voice that was heard across this country. Although not a very large turnout of voters it once again proved how important a vote really is.

Washington – are you listening?

New Hampshire went blue in the last two elections. House legislators apparently thought this was a mandate to waste time voting on as many of the liberal issues of the day as they could squeeze into a week. So taking their lead from the federal government it was “full speed ahead” as they clamored aboard the circus clown car.

Just when you think it couldn’t get any crazier – it got crazier. This past week was busy in the New Hampshire House with the first order of business voting to repeal the death penalty. The liberal hand-wringers were worried that some innocent person might be wrongly executed. Virtually no chance of that. The last execution in New Hampshire was in 1939. There is one person on death row in this state, convicted in December of 2008 for killing a police office. This is the first death sentence in 50 years. The Democratic Governor is expected to veto this bill if it reaches his desk.

Is there nothing else more useless to take up the time of these elected officials? Oh but there is – gay marriage next on the agenda. Legislators voted to make New Hampshire the third state to allow gay couples to marry. And why not? Shouldn’t homosexual couples be just as miserable as heterosexual married couples during a messy divorce?

Enough for one week? Not yet. The Dems needed to get that pesky little medical marijuana bill passed. Under this bill someone is permited to possess six plants and up to two ounces of useable marijuana if suffering from a “debilitating medical condition” under the supervision of a physician. One might predict that “debilitating medical conditions” will suddenly be on the rise in the state of New Hampshire.

Then there was the issue of parental notification. Lawmakers decided that girls younger than 18 need not tell their parents before they have an abortion. It is downright infuriating that elected officials would take away a parent’s responsibility and knowledge of a minor child undergoing a medical procedure. It suggests that legislators consider themselves far more superior in their decision-making skills and know what’s best for parents with minor children.

And the fun’s not over yet. Up next, the “Bathroom Bill” for those that experience gender identity problems. Have you gone to the restroom lately and had to decide which one to use – male or female? Apparently there are some lost souls out there that have to ponder this. Maybe legislators need to mandate a third restroom for those that are confused. The House voted 181-149 to kill the bill.

With an enormous state budget deficit to contend with this past week’s issues were obviously deemed more important and pushed to the top of the docket. Hopefully with the end of the week brings the end of this three-ring circus and the House starts working on the real important issues of the day. The good citizens of New Hampshire must be wondering when the big top tent will come down and the circus moves on to another destination.

In yet another move from the Smooth-Operator Obama there is talk that Senator Judd Gregg (R-NH) is being considered for the Secretary of Commerce job. This would open up a Senate seat that would have to be filled by a pick from Governor John Lynch – a Democrat. Along with Al Franken this of course would seal the deal on a filibuster-proof Senate. The country would then see a Democratic free-for-all. Here it comes – increased welfare state, nanny state, handouts, bailouts, pork-barrel bills
all on the backs of working and middle-class families. And who do we have in Congress to stop this runaway train – nobody.

This would be good for Senator Gregg as he has virtually no hope of being elected to anything in the state of New Hampshire ever again. He is the last Republican holdout. Two congressional seats went to Democrats two years ago and Republican John Sununu lost his seat in the past election to Democrat sweetheart Jeanne Shaheen. This leaves only Judd Gregg who loses credibility among state Republicans almost daily. He was one of the head honchos of the corporate bailout bill which there was little constituency support.

Senator Judd Gregg’s political career is on life support. The only way to keep his political life alive is to be resuscitated by the Obama Administration.

In his latest bout of mouth diarrhea, embattled Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich revealed to ABC’s “Good Morning America” and “The View” Monday that he considered appointing talk show host Oprah Winfrey to President Barack Obama’s vacant Senate seat.

The comments came just one day before Blago is set to stand in his Senate impeachment trial, further adding to the governor’s list of quirky antics. He claimed Winfrey would have been “someone who would help Barack Obama in a significant way become president.” ‘Lady O’ was quick to dismiss the notion saying she believed she “would be a good senator too,” however “she’s not interested.”

While this may be true, this revelation may bolster allegations made by prosecutors that Blagojevich was trying to sell the seat to the highest bidder. And what better choice? The Queen of Talk is said to be worth “billions” with her hit TV show, book club, and related HARPO production gigs — another sign elections and nominations becoming more of a popularity contest rather than the best person for the job.

The defeat of Senator Ted Stevens means another Republican Senate seat lost. Anchorage Mayor Democrat Mark Begich will replace Stevens in January. Congress is one seat closer to a filibuster-proof Senate with two elections still pending in Georgia and Minnesota. The departure of Stevens could be seen as sweeping the “dead wood” out of the Republican Party. It is time to renew the GOP and there is no place for a convicted felon among the conservative ranks. Time and resolve on the part of the conservative base is going to be required. Time is short and the resolve must be strong. Weak and moderate leaders can no longer be tolerated or allowed to be on the Republican ticket. Strong Republican leadership is going to have to step forward and give the party direction and purpose. Without this the GOP is going to continue to slide into the abyss of hopelessness and defeat.
